African Diversity Chamber of Commerce and Industry Calls for Urgent Action. The African Diversity Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ADCCI) has issued an urgent call to stakeholders, law enforcement, and the general public to prioritize the protection of the lives and freedoms of all Ghanaians, especially those who are minorities and vulnerable members of society.
This appeal comes in the wake of alarming incidents of unprovoked attacks targeting individuals within the community. One recent case involves Edna Naa Adjeley and her partner, Abigail, who were attacked without provocation in August 2022. Similarly, cases such as those of Kofi Saahene and Amos Akuffo highlight a disturbing trend of hostility and violence against minority groups.
In a statement released by Frederick Yaw Agyei, President and Executive Secretary of the ADCCI, the organization expressed grave concern about the growing frequency of these incidents. “Our members, who are law-abiding citizens, continue to live in fear of being targeted simply for living their lives. These attacks are unacceptable, and the perpetrators must be brought to justice to serve as a deterrent to others. Every Ghanaian deserves the freedom to live in safety and dignity, as enshrined in our Constitution,” he stated.
The Chamber has specifically called on the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, to launch thorough investigations into these cases and ensure that justice is served. “We urge the Ghana Police Service to act swiftly and decisively to protect the lives and freedoms of all citizens, particularly those who are most at risk. The law must work for everyone, without exception,” the statement added.
The ADCCI emphasized that protecting the rights of all individuals is essential for fostering a peaceful and inclusive society. They also urged community leaders, civil society organizations, and policymakers to take proactive measures to address the root causes of intolerance and violence.
The organization reiterated its commitment to standing by its members and advocating for their rights. “We will not be silent as our members continue to face threats and violence. It is the collective responsibility of all stakeholders to ensure a Ghana where everyone can live without fear,” Mr. Agyei concluded.
The African Diversity Chamber of Commerce and Industry, known for promoting inclusivity and diversity in business and beyond, is hopeful that their call will spur action and lead to meaningful change in the protection of vulnerable groups across the nation.
