Standing Together: A Call for Compassion and Justice for Our LGBTQIA Community
Published on August 15th, 2022
The African Diversity Chamber of Commerce, a nonprofit organization dedicated to advocating for the rights and empowerment of LGBTQIA individuals in Ghana, is deeply saddened to inform our community and the general public of a harrowing incident that recently took place in Accra. On 3rd May 2023, two beloved members of our community, Bismark Adjei Nkansah and Winfred, were brutally attacked by a group of individuals who have taken it upon themselves to spread hate and intolerance.
This shocking event unfolded after Bismark and Winfred visited Oasis Club to celebrate their love anniversary. Their decision to express affection publicly led to an unfortunate and violent reaction from onlookers who, in their misguided anger, not only attacked them physically but also followed them to their home in Pobiman, Amasaman, where they set their house ablaze.
The cruelty of this act is not only heartbreaking but also a stark reminder of the increasing dangers faced by LGBTQIA individuals in Ghana. The right to love and to express that love is fundamental, and no one should live in fear for choosing to share their life with another person. Love is not a crime, and no one should be punished for it.
We were made aware of this incident when Bismark and Winfred reached out to us, seeking a safe place to stay. Our hearts go out to them during this incredibly difficult time. We have provided them with temporary shelter and have reported this heinous crime to the Ghana Police Service, urging a thorough investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice.
The African Diversity Chamber of Commerce stands firmly with Bismark and Winfred, and we extend our unwavering support to them and to every member of our community. We call on the Ghanaian society to embrace tolerance and understanding. It is archaic and barbaric to attack individuals for expressing love, and such actions strip away the very freedoms that every human being deserves.
The economic and social wellbeing of our LGBTQIA community is increasingly threatened by the hostility that has become all too common. We urge the people of Ghana to recognize that diversity is not a threat but a strength that enriches our society.
In light of this tragic event, we also advise our members to exercise caution. Please avoid clubs, restaurants, and other spaces that are not LGBTQIA-friendly, and always prioritize your safety.
To our friends Bismark and Winfred, and to all members of our community, we assure you that we are here for you. You are not alone, and we will continue to fight for your rights, your safety, and your freedom.
The African Diversity Chamber of Commerce is committed to creating sustainable businesses and jobs for LGBTQIA individuals, advocating for their rights, empowering our community, and providing safe spaces where everyone can live authentically and without fear.
Let us all stand together in love and solidarity, and work towards a future where no one is persecuted for who they are or whom they love.
